The Kosmonavt Yuriy Gagarin was built in Lenningrad and launched in 1971. It's role as part of the Soviet Union’s space mission fleet was to ensure communications with their spacecraft when land based communication was out of range.
Schooner John F. Leavitt
The John F. Leavitt was built at Newbert & Wallace Shipyard in Thomaston Maine. Launched in 1979, the 97-foot two-masted schooner made the initial stage of it's maiden voyage to a dock on the Town River in Quincy. After taking on a cargo of lumber and chemicals, the John F. Leavitt left Quincy bound for Haiti and was sunk in a Nor'Easter. These photos were taken just before the Leavitt left on it's first and last voyage.
